Do you know what today is? Today, my friend, is Sunday, May 29th. Do you know what this means? It MEANS TV ON TUESDAY! YAY-AH!
So, its been nearly a month that we have had the t.v. unplugged. It wasn't as hard as I had initially thought it would have been for our family, but of course there have been a few times I wished that I could have turned it on for the kids to have something to watch for a minute.
Since this was our first ever television "fast" I think we will do a couple of things differently next time. For one, I don't know if the month of May was the wisest choice for a first fast. "Sweeps" happens in May. This means that all of the entertainment big wigs are taking a close look at all of the ratings going on in TV land, so the producers of every show are giving everything they've got to bring in the high numbers. This means explosive plots, A-List Celebrity line-ups on all of the talk shows, and of course, intriguing Season Finales. Sigh...
Another reason we might never opt for May again is that I live in Oklahoma. There are a lot of storms here, and for a week there, I was plugging the TV back in every other day to watch the severe weather updates. ( See Disclaimer in previous post) I just feel a little defeated in that respect, even though I know it was necessary. My husband already pointed it out to me that we could have easily turned on the AM radio and get the same coverage, but I'm sort of a visual person. ( Is it an eighth of an inch away or a full inch away?! This makes a HUGE difference honey! WHERE THE HECK IS LINCOLN COUNTY?!)
One thing is for sure though, I have yet another reason to stand in awe of Michelle Duggar. That woman not only has about 87 children running afround ( Thats not technically much of an exaggeration if you count heads when her friends from Kentucky come down for a visit) but she and Jim-Bob (thats his name, for realsies) have NOT owned more than 1 television since they got married about 30 years ago. So, I thought of them when I got frazzled.
Oh, and let me be clear, we had a lot of people asking if we were doing this for religious reasons. Nope. Just needing to step away from the set for a little bit. I know the term "television fast" made people wonder, but it was easier than saying We are refraining from watching tv for 30 days. On second thought, I just realized I could've said "Television Break". Oh wells. So much for trying not to appear holier than I actually was.
So, We MADE it! And I really do think we are all better for it. We definitely had more family time, and read more books, and were much more active outside! We're definitely not going to go back to how much we were watching before, but everything in moderation, right! I think the first thing we are going to watch is probably one of then boys' favorites, Disneys' Jake and the Neverland Pirates! AHOY!

I'm proud of you Celia! It's hard to unplug, especially with children. You are to be admired. :)
